Smart2B pilot sites

Smart2B includes comprehensive demonstrators in 5 pilot sites (14 buildings) in Mediterranean climate, central and northern European climate. The pilot sites, or demonstrators, aim at showcasing the seamless integration of the developed Smart2B solutions in diverse building typologies (multi-office building, mall complex with retail stores and restaurants, Airbnb dwellings, building blocks with multiple apartments as well as single-family houses) to facilitate the smart control of smart appliances and legacy equipment.

Albertslund Retirement Home pilot site - Smart2B

The buildings was constructed in 2016 in Albertslund (Denmark) and hosts retired residents as well as common/shared areas (i.e. restaurant, gathering room). The heat is provided by a district heating/cooling system and already has a BMS, daylight and window shading control system, an indoor air temperature monitoring system installed.

Main Challenge

The ARD pilot is a residential pilot in cold climate composed of the ARH (Albertslund Retirement Home) and the ARA (Albertslund Residential Apartments). The overall objective will be to demonstrate the smartness upgrade of the ARD by integrating 75% of the available legacy equipment in the ARA pilot (i.e. washing machines refrigerators, coffee machines and dish washers) through the SMART2B platform, as well as integrating the BMS (building management system) in ARH.

Equipment

Ready Smart Meter installed in Danish Pilot. Meters are used to measure energy consumption on the circuit board of the residential pilots. Can be used to measure up to 3 different circuits
Ready Smart Plug installed in Danish pilot. Smart Plugs are used to measure energy consumption of the equipment connected to them

Lisboa Social Community pilot site - Smart2B

Comprise 9 buildings located within the greater Lisbon district (Portugal), is home to 120 children/young adults and 83 in-house staff, with the goal of providing the residents with life structures as close as possible to those of a family, with attention to their physical, intellectual and moral development and their inclusion in society. The buildings consist of bedrooms for the 12-24 residents, common areas such as living room and kitchen, and many legacy appliances, with no smart BMS in place in any of the homes.

Main Challenge

The LSC pilot is a residential pilot in a warm climate, which has a distinct characteristic due to its social aspect, seeing that LSC (Lisboa Social Communities) is a group of buildings inhabited by children and young adults.
The objective will be to demonstrate the smartness upgrade of the LSCs by integrating more than 80% of the available legacy equipment through the SMART2B platform and make it controllable for the LSCs’ occupants, whereas the supreme objective will be to inform and educate the young adults about their behaviour and how this impacts the overall building energy performance, the building efficiency and their electricity bill.

Equipment

IEQ sensor device installed. Device to measure air quality. Temperature, CO2 and humidity
PV installation in SCML pilot
Re:dy Smart Meter installed in LSC pilot. Smart Meters are used to measure energy consumption in the circuit board. Measure total energy consumption of the household and additional circuits.
Re:dy Smart plugs installed in LSC pilot. Smart Plugs are used to measure energy consumption of the equipment connected to them
Re:dy Gateway schematic. Is the router of the re:dy system. Communicates with the plugs and the meters and sends the measured data to the platform

Lisboa Airbnb Buildings pilot site - Smart2B

The LABs are owned by private owners and comprise two historic buildings constructed around 1900, that are used for shorter-term rentals and thus exhibit distinct characteristics in terms of occupancy and consumption patterns. The LABs are equipped with daylighting system, deferrable DHW system, split AC units, motion sensors and common legacy appliances including TVs, dish washers, washing machines, refrigerators, coffee machines and different lighting systems.

Main Challenge

LAB (Lisboa AirBnB Buildings) is a unique pilot, due to its status as a residential apartment which is used for short term rentals. The ultimate objective for the LABs pilots is thus not only to improve the smartness of the building but rather evaluate and assess the effect short-term rental buildings have on the buildings’ energy/smartness performance and how an improved shorter-term rental energy management enabled through SMART2B will benefit both building owners and users/occupants.

CJC is a big shopping centre in Järfälla (Sweden) which is operated by the Citycon and has different areas, retail stores and restaurants/cafes. The pilot project area has 20 air handing units plus HVAC equipment (i.e. ground heating pump for heating and cooling, district heating), solar panels on the roof as well as multiple parking lots.

Main Challenge

The CJC (Citycon Jakobsbergs Centrum) is a commercial pilot in cold climate, which is composed by a shopping mall in Sweden. The main target for the building operator is thus, to establish the most convenient climatic environment in terms of indoor comfort and air quality for the shoppers and the occupants of the mall. The pilot will implement measures to improve the air quality of the building whilst reducing operating costs through a more granular and efficient building control resulting in overall reduced energy consumption.

Equipment

eSense device. Device used to measure air quality, CO2, temperature and humidity,
eWairable device from EB. Device to measure air quality that can be transported by the user to get a more accurate reading.

Alcantarilla Office Complex pilot site - Smart2B

AOC is used for commercial offices located in an industrial area called “Poligono Industrial del Oeste” belonging to the municipality of Alcantarilla (Spain). The building is equipped with central lighting systems for the common areas, individual HVAC systems (heat pumps for cooling/heating) for every office in the building, individual lighting systems for every office in the building and computing appliances for every office with PCs, laptops, printers, routers, bridges, microwaves.

Main Challenge

The AOC (Alcantarilla Office Complex) is a commercial pilot in a warm climate composed by an office building in Spain. The pilot will implement measures to improve the air quality of the building whilst reducing operating costs through a more granular and efficient building control resulting in overall reduced energy consumption. This pilot will also be crucial to test flexibility services due to the presence of a photovoltaic panel and electric vehicle chargers.
